Ribbon Figured African Khaya, (khaya ivorensis) is a hardwood species from equatorial West Africa. The wood is easy to cut, glue, and finish. Trees are large with average logs in the 2-4' diameter range and tree heights of 75-125' tall. The wood is used for anything from musical instruments to boats to everything imaginable in between! This highly figured timber has fancy  patterns ranging from wide, loose curls to fine figure for smaller articles. Ebony is a dense black hardwood, in the genus Diospyros, is dense enough to sink in water. It is finely-textured and has a very smooth finish when polished, making it valuable as an ornamental wood. The top is alternative ivory

Waddi(acacia peuce)
bowl135 x 65 mm irregular

Waddi is a slow growing tree to 15m tall. They are found in Boulia and Birdsville on the fringe of the Simpson Desert. The tree may live for 1000 years and has one of the hardest timbers in the world. As the leaves are palatable to stock there is a need for its protection. In the years 2002-2004 and recently during the drought, the status became “vulnerable”.

Blackheart Sassafras(Atherosperma moschatum)
The southern sassafras is a small to medium-sized tree, growing around 6 to 25 m tall. However, in Tasmania, it can reach heights exceeding 40 m and a width of 1 m. The timber is in demand for panelling, turnery, musical instruments, and other specialty work, (carvings, dishes, and boxes for tourists). The staining of the black heartwood is caused by fungus, and makes the timber markings particularly attractive. In this case the direction of staining suits the design of the vase.

WARNING!!

Allergies/Toxicity:Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, Australian Blackwood has been reported as a sensitizer.Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation, as well as asthma-like symptoms.
